Email is the one channel where you own the audience and the relationship. When it is set up well, a handful of automated flows can generate revenue every day without extra ad spend. This guide covers building the list, the flows every business should run, writing and testing emails, keeping them out of spam, and the metrics that matter.
Owned beats rented
Ad platforms change costs and rules overnight. Your list does not. Email often returns more per pound spent than paid channels when it is built properly, because you are talking to people who already know you.
Build the list the right way
Quality matters more than size. Collect addresses with clear consent and a reason to subscribe: a useful guide, a first-order discount, early access, or a regular newsletter that is actually worth reading. Place sign-up forms where intent is highest (checkout, blog posts, resource pages) and ask for as little as you need. Never buy or rent lists. They damage deliverability, break data-protection rules and rarely convert.
The flows every business should run
- Welcome series — set expectations and make the first offer.
- Nurture — teach, prove, and handle objections over weeks.
- Abandon flows — browse, cart and checkout recovery.
- Post-purchase / onboarding — reduce churn and drive the second purchase.
- Winback — reactivate lapsed contacts before you pay to re-acquire them.
What each flow should do
- Welcome: three to five emails over about ten days. Introduce who you are, deliver what you promised, show your best proof, and make one clear offer.
- Cart and checkout abandonment: a reminder within an hour, a second message the next day with answers to common concerns (delivery, returns, payment), and a final nudge a few days later. Offer help before offering discounts.
- Browse abandonment: a lighter reminder with the products viewed and related items.
- Post-purchase: confirm the order, set delivery expectations, share care or setup tips, request a review at the right time, then suggest complementary products.
- Winback: target customers who have not bought for a period that fits your buying cycle, with a clear reason to return. Remove those who still do not engage.
- B2B nurture: a sequence of useful emails after a download or enquiry, each with one idea and one next step, ending with a prompt to book a call.
Segmentation beats broadcast
Segment by behaviour, not demographics: recency, engagement, product interest and purchase history. A relevant email to 2,000 people outperforms a generic one to 20,000. Start with a few simple segments: new subscribers, active customers, lapsed customers, and high-value customers. Add more only when you have the content to match.
Writing emails that get read
- Write a subject line that is specific and honest. Curiosity works only if the email delivers.
- Use preview text to extend the subject, not repeat it.
- One goal per email, one main button, and links that are easy to tap on a phone.
- Keep the layout simple. Plain, personal-feeling emails often outperform heavily designed ones.
- Use a real sender name people recognise, and a reply-to address that is monitored.
- For Arabic or bilingual emails, test right-to-left rendering across the main email apps before sending.
Deliverability fundamentals
Authenticate your sending domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), warm new domains slowly, prune unengaged contacts, and never buy lists. One spam-trap hit can undo a year of reputation. Large mailbox providers have tightened their rules for bulk senders: expect to need proper authentication, a one-click unsubscribe in marketing emails, and spam-complaint rates kept well below 0.3%. Monitor your sender reputation with the tools the providers offer, and remove addresses that bounce.
Consent and compliance
Rules differ by market. The UK and EU require a lawful basis and clear consent for marketing, the US has its own CAN-SPAM requirements, and Saudi Arabia and the UAE have data-protection laws that govern how personal data is collected and used. In every market, identify yourself clearly, include a working unsubscribe, honour opt-outs promptly and store consent records. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp have their own opt-in requirements.
Metrics that matter
Open rates have become less reliable because some mail apps pre-load images. Focus instead on:
- Click-through rate and click-to-open rate
- Conversion rate and revenue per recipient (or per email sent)
- Unsubscribe and spam-complaint rates
- List growth and the share of engaged subscribers
- Revenue from automated flows versus one-off campaigns
Test, learn, repeat
Test one thing at a time: subject lines, offers, send times, first-screen layout. Use a sample large enough to give a meaningful difference, and keep a log of what you learned so the whole team benefits. Review flows every quarter, because the emails that worked a year ago slowly go stale.
Wire it into the wider funnel
Email is the follow-up layer for B2B lead generation and the retention layer for ecommerce growth. Content fuels it. See content marketing that converts. Our lead generation service builds the funnels and follow-up that email depends on, and our digital marketing service connects email with search, social and paid campaigns.
